EAM holds talks with FMs of Russia, Argentina, Nigeria, Netherlands

New Delhi, Mar 1 (UNI) Continuing his bilateral meetings with visiting Foreign Ministers on the sidelines of the G20 meeting, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Geoffrey Onyeama of Nigeria, Deputy PM and FM of Netherlands Wopke Hoekstra and Santiago Cafiero of Argentina.

Separately, Secretary East Saurabh Kumar held talks with South Korean Vice FM Lee Dohoon.

On his meeting with his Russian counterpart, EAM Jaishankar said in a tweet that he held wide-ranging talks with Lavrov:

“A wide ranging discussion with FM Sergey Lavrov of Russia on #G20FMM sidelines.

“Exchanged views on our bilateral cooperation and G20 issues.”

On his meeting with the Nigerian FM Onyeama, he said that he underlined India’s strong commitment to the Global South and the interests of the African Union. He also took up with the Nigerian minister the issue of detained Indian sailors on board the merchant ship MV Heroic Idun.

“Good to meet FM @GeoffreyOnyeama of Nigeria this afternoon.

“Underlined India’s strong commitment to the Global South and the interests of the African Union.

“Noted recent developments in our bilateral cooperation, especially in educational exchanges. Welcomed direct flights between our two countries.

“Took up the MV Heroic Idun issue and pressed for early repatriation of crew members,” he said.

Sixteen Indian sailors aboard oil tanker MT Heroic Idun have been in detention since August last year, first in Equatorial Guinea and now in Nigeria, for alleged oil theft, among other charges. India has been pursuing the cause of their early repatriation.

On his meeting with the FM of Netherlands, Wopke Hoekstra, he said the two sides had good discussion on technology, mobility and innovation.

On his meeting with the Argentinian FM Cafiero, he that their bilateral trade has expanded significantly as well as their defence cooperation.

“So nice to welcome FM @SantiagoCafiero of Argentina this evening.

“Glad to see the steady progress in our relations. Trade has expanded significantly even as defence cooperation unfolds. Our nuclear partnership has also been mutually beneficial.”

The talks during Secretary East Saurabh Kumar’s meeting with South Korean Deputy FM Lee Dohoon were focused on strengthening the bilateral Special Strategic Partnership.
